Advanced Optimization Analysis For Light Structures

The goal of optimization analysis is to create an optimal design for a given design space, material properties, performance targets, and manufacturing constraints. Our engineers are experienced in design optimization ranging from a single variable model to complex FEA models in a wide range of industries.

A baseline analysis of the product is first carried out to measure the current performance levels, followed by an optimization analysis to minimize factors including mass, cost and design space. At Calcate we perform topology, free-size and composite optimization analysis during the initial stages of design and to improve existing designs.

Topology Optimization

The goal of topology optimization is to generate innovative concept designs for a given design space, material properties, performance targets, and manufacturing constraints. Topology optimization can be applied to 1-D, 2-D, and 3D design spaces to achieve performance such as:

  • Stiffness to weight ratio
  • Strain energy to weight ratio
  • Natural frequency-to-weight ratio

Free-size Optimization

Free-size optimization is widely applied in finding the optimal thickness distribution of metallic structures and identifying the optimum ply thicknesses in composites.

Composite Optimization

We work with our clients to aid them in the design and optimization of composite laminates while meeting manufacturing constraints. We optimize composite laminates by finding:

  • Optimal number of plies
  • Optimal ply stacking sequence
